Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

July is designated as the Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, which focuses on the mental health challenges faced by minority communities. This observance honors Bebe Moore Campbell, a passionate advocate for mental health awareness, and highlights issues such as stigma and inadequate access to resources.
Mental health is essential for overall well-being, yet many minority groups experience significant disparities in care. Campbell’s advocacy encourages inclusive conversations about mental health, urging individuals to seek help and prompting healthcare providers to offer culturally competent care.
This month serves as an important opportunity to reflect on and address the mental health needs of minority communities, fostering open discussions and reducing stigma to improve access to care.

The Summer Slide– Kids’ Academic and Mental Health
Summer break, a highly anticipated time for children, can paradoxically pose challenges to their mental well-being and academic progress, a phenomenon often termed “summer slide”. However, with proactive strategies and community support, it can be a period of positive growth.
The transition from the structured school year to a less formalized summer routine can disrupt a child’s stability, leading to boredom, understimulation, and mental health issues like depression. Inconsistent sleep, common in summer, can negatively impact well-being.
Screen Time and Social Media Concerns:
- Increased screen time and social media use during summer are linked to loneliness, social comparison, and a heightened risk of digital addiction.
- Research shows a direct link between increased social media use and rising depressive symptoms in early adolescents, with this relationship being unidirectional.
- Studies also connect over five hours of daily social media use to a significantly higher risk of suicide in teens.
Loss of Support Systems and Environmental Stressors:
- Summer also means a loss of crucial school-based mental health services and social interactions.
- For vulnerable children, this can mean prolonged exposure to unsafe environments, as school often provides a safe haven.
- Summer crime rates often increase, which can be traumatic for students in certain communities. Depression symptoms are 61% higher and PTSD symptoms 85% higher in crime hot spots.
- Food insecurity, due to reduced access to school meal programs, also rises. This correlates with higher rates of depression, stress, and anxiety.
Academic Regression:
- Academically, the “summer slide” means students may start the new year at a lower level than where they finished the previous one.
- This learning loss, particularly severe for disadvantaged teens, directly impacts well-being, fueling emotional stress, anxiety, and reduced self-esteem.
Empowering Summer Well-being: Parental Strategies and Local Opportunities
Parents can mitigate these challenges by:
- Establishing consistent routines, including regular sleep and meal schedules.
- Managing screen time mindfully and encouraging offline activities like reading and outdoor play.
- Fostering physical activity and social connections.
- Recognizing signs of distress and seeking professional help if needed.
To combat academic loss, daily reading for 30-60 minutes is fundamental. High-quality summer learning programs are highly effective in stemming learning loss and fostering social-emotional skills.
For families in the Metro St. Louis and East St. Louis areas, numerous resources are available:
- Local YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs: Offer summer camps and programs.
- Gateway Region YMCA Camps: https://gwrymca.org/camps
- Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis: https://www.bgcstl.org/
- Public Libraries: Offer summer camps and reading programs.

July’s Employee of the Month
Debbie received some amazing nominations. Here’s a sample of what her coworkers had to say about her:
She handles some very complex cases and is sometimes able to keep clients out of the criminal justice system altogether.
Deb has been an example of consistency and commitment to her clients and to the Center. In her capacity working with our Specialty Court clients, she has excelled in offering care and attention in helping substance abuse, mental illness and cooccurring clients’ make their way through the justice system and has enjoyed some success helping these same clients regain the ability to re-enter life as productive members of society, leaving them at more at peace with themselves and with the world around them.
While only working Tuesdays through Thursdays, she makes effective use of her previous years of clinical experience to achieve things in the courtroom that only serve to enhance CBHC’s image and reputation.
Bet You Didn’t Know
Did you know that we have an actor among us? Among the many fascinating interests and hobbies among the CBHC staff, Rachel Linzy has been building up an acting resume!
Her interest began with school plays in middle school, but for the last year, Rachel has been pursuing (and getting) roles in front of the camera. Rachel brings a range of powerful and emotionally complex characters to life in various independent films.
Describing her roles, Rachel says:
My past roles include portraying a compassionate aunt grappling with addiction and a determined news reporter investigating a gripping and dramatic case. Currently, I am filming a suspenseful series about a love-crazed mistress, and next month, I begin production on a heart-wrenching drama about a single mother fighting to care for her seriously ill daughter.
My favorite role so far, is the single mother character because it holds a special place in my heart due to how deeply it resonates with my personal life. It’s the most relatable role I’ve played, and thus far, and one that pushes me both emotionally and creatively.
Many of these projects will be released later this year, and Rachel is proud to get to pursue her passion and be able to say of herself “I am a paid actress.”
Keep your eyes on your screens to see if you find a familiar face!

Fireworks Laws in Missouri and Illinois

As we approach Independence Day, the enjoyment that comes from the sight of fireworks exploding across the evening sky is something that many people may wish to have from the convenience of their own home. However, Illinois and Missouri have specific laws and regulations pertaining to fireworks that one should keep in mind for a safe and legal celebration. A summary of each state’s laws is listed below.
Illinois: Most items commonly considered or described as fireworks are classified into two categories according to Pyrotechnic Use Act; consumer and display. Consumer fireworks such as sparklers, fountains and ground spinners; items intended for personal use may be legal, although may be further regulated and/or banned by county and municipal laws. Display fireworks, such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, and roman candles, are prohibited to private citizens. Only professional displays conducted by licensed operators may purchase, possess, and/or use them within state lines. The Act’s violation is a Class A misdemeanor, with fines of up to $2,500 and up to one year in jail.
Missouri: Like Illinois, Missouri law classifies fireworks into the same two categories, consumer and display. However, items such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, and roman candles, are considered consumer fireworks in Missouri, and are legal therefore to purchase and to use there. Missouri law limits fireworks sales to two periods during the calendar year, June 20 to July 10 for Independence Day and December 20 to January 2 for New Year’s Day. Further restrictions via county and municipal laws and regulations may exist.
It is therefore legal for an Illinois resident to travel to Missouri, purchase fireworks there, and use them in Missouri. It would not be legal for that same Illinois resident to purchase fireworks in Missouri and use them in Illinois. This would violate both Illinois and federal fireworks laws.
